Hi, I wanted to create a discussion / suggestion for discord server in relation to the TF2 UGC servers and its rules.

This suggestion is mainly written because of the frequent ways the rules became in terms of changing and updating and generally, them being unsure at some times or being contradicted by two staff members. For example, the NSFW rule which is sometimes totally different to what it is displayed on the website under TF2 Rules, as it gets frequently discussed and changed and when it comes under reports or in-game call-admin's, then they are frequently different on many "same" basis depicted on the spray(s).

For example, at 11th of December 2023, there was a change that was made and was totally un-noticed by player-base and cause a lot of confusion, false or "not-meant" bans for some sprays and a lot of kickback for the staff members that had to still enforce the rule.

Another example can be the portal rule, which was extensively discussed in reports and support channel on UGC discord by many staff users, and normal users and later left unnoticed, this was even more intense than the NSFW update of rules as there were a growing number of players asking for the guidance or coming in with "false" or unknown ban reasonings, such as asking what counts as blocking the portals, what could reach the extend of violating the rule, what could happen if... and so on. Some threads on this topic reached 200-300 replies from both staff and players as well as mentions of the rules being discussed, or mentioned to higher staff members. In this example, I would not notice the rule if I did not look actively over discord channel and peak at the reports, for players reporting others about it and from players who have been banned and asked for support whilst being also confused on the topic. Just to mention, none of the discussed changes on tickets (verbally) or rules (officially) after the discussions or any progress regarding them, or explanations were mentioned as "changes" were never announced nor even sometimes added to the official website (forums) on tf2 topic.

But not to keep it only about the rules not being updated or being sometimes overly confused or unstable on what they stand on, the updating suggestion should stand regardless or a new system to be made. Some possible solutions and suggestions as it follows below:

  • Create a channel in Discord server that automatically detects any changes made to a post on forums via a bot (such as UGC bot) and notifies players by pinging them either by "TF2" role or a custom "TF2 role update" role.
  • Create a channel in Discord server just to post changes / notifications to players without any usage of bots / methods with same addition of "TF2" or custom (new) "TF2 role update" and just use such roles for discord rule changes.
  • Create a channel as mentioned in first suggestion but without pinging any roles and whenever a change is made, a bot displays "A change has been made in TF2 rules, check (discord channel name)" in general chat, without pinging and potentially irritating anyone.
  • Create a channel that is also exact same as in the first suggestion, but make it only visible for people who want to see it & use it. For example: There is many people with already set TF2 tag, to indicate which game they are in favour of, or play the most. To avoid that part of the audience being irritated for something they might've not wanted to sign up for as some may not be as active on discord, a new role could be created such as "TF2 role update" and with one mention to all (as in @everyone) or just TF2 role, and then anyone who reacts with such role gets access to the rule-update (or whatever name is preferred) channel.
I believe its important to have a way of notifying players about rule changes for whichever game, as it creates loads of confusion and especially on topics / rules that there is no definitive set of answers. Yes this potentially touches some parts of the rules not being fully described or users misreading parts of the rules but in many cases, a lot of players got banned straight after the rule implementation of portal blocking (spawn-camp adjacent rule) and as much as it is very arguable that players have to read rules when they join the server, but it is also arguable that sometimes the rules change too quickly to be noticed by users / players especially as the NSFW rule was changed within 1 month period and not even a full month by the time it was again unclear / changed back as discussed by some UGC players and members. This also leads to some unintended consequences and just a lot more hassle but also provides staff a "backbone" to say that users have been warned / notified in response than creating any possible drama / unnecessary discussion or arguments and save time therefore making it more efficient and relieving.

Thank you.

I could ask about a "Community - Changelog" Channel that detects what is posted and posts whatever was said to it. But other then that i dont see a discord channel being used. - @Where
